The Incredible Journey of Gigantic Modules: How They Safely Traveled Over 3000 Miles

In an astounding demonstration of logistical prowess, India’s Express Global Logistics (EXG) recently accomplished the herculean task of moving colossal modules to Saudi Arabia for a green hydrogen initiative. These modules, each weighing up to 250 tonnes, were critical to the project’s success.

The operation involved the intricate transport of 14 enormous modules, each measuring 50 meters in length, 12 meters in width, and 18 meters in height, cumulatively weighing about 1,500 freight tonnes. To achieve this, EXG deployed state-of-the-art Scheuerle self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) from their Megaload fleet. The equipment featured 48 axle lines, two power pack units, and custom-made spacers to manage the load effectively.

Eight of the modules were seamlessly loaded onto vessels using a sophisticated roll-on roll-off (RoRo) system, which involved employing ramp plates and stools. This method ensured smooth and safe movement of the modules. Meanwhile, the remaining six units were expertly carried to the jetty by SPMTs, then lifted into position by crawler cranes.

The operation presented challenging scenarios that were expertly navigated by EXG. Thanks to strategic planning and sophisticated equipment, EXG’s engineering and operational teams executed the task flawlessly. The importance of precise ballasting of the vessel was also highlighted as a key factor in maintaining stability throughout the journey.

As part of their continual growth, EXG launched a joint venture named Megaload with Italian heavyweight Fagioli in January 2023, enhancing their capabilities in sectors like petrochemical and construction through innovative lifting solutions.
